Understanding Defense

3-4 versus 4-3:
All teams are 4-3 defense except Patriots, Steelers, Buccaneers, and Chargers.

3-4 and 4-3 Flex Positions:
4-3 Teams only use the 3-4 Flex Position when you choose a defensive play or counter that utilizes the 3-4 defensive scheme.
3-4 Teams only use the 4-3 Flex Position when  you choose a defensive play or counter that utilizes the 4-3 defensive scheme.

Awareness:
Favor players with a higher Awareness or an Awareness boost.  This will increase your overall Awareness listed under Head-To-Head >Strategy and increase the likelihood your counters are successful.

Middle Linebackers:
Key attributes are Zone, Play Recognition, and Height (see MUTHEAD database at http://www.muthead.com for Height).

Linebackers:

The LB displayed on the right hand side of the screen will cover the TE and should have good Zone and Tackle.

The LB displayed on the left hand side of the screen will cover the slot receiver and should have good Zone, Speed, and Acceleration.


Defensive Tackles:
Key attributes are Block Shed and Play Recognition.

Defensive Ends:
Key attribute is Block Shed.

DE's with high Power Moves should be positioned to stop the run.

DE's with high Finesse Moves should be positioned to block passes.

Cornerbacks:
Key attributes are Man, Play Recognition, and Jump.

Safeties:
Safeties should be tall with good Tackle.

The Free Safety is on the top left side of the screen.  This position needs good Zone, Speed, and Play Recognition.

The Strong Safety is on the top right side of the screen.  This position needs good Hit Power, Speed, and Pursuit.

Nickel Position:
Nickel covers the slot receiver and should have both good Man and Zone.  Generally a CB is a good fit.

Dime Position:
Dime covers the tight end and should have good Zone, Hit Power, and Tackle.  Generally a S is the best fit.
